Saâdaoui declares war on psychotropic drugs in schools

By creating a sectoral committee responsible for detecting drugs

After raising the alarm about an invasion of the phenomenon of drugs, in particular psychotropic drugs, in schools, on September 28, during a speech delivered on the occasion of the opening of the work of the National School Health Day in its first edition, the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui took action, yesterday Monday, by launching the Sectoral Committee responsible for detecting drug consumption in schools.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Health which is chaired by Minister Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene, Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui supervised, yesterday Monday in Algiers, the establishment of the sectoral committee responsible for detecting drug consumption in schools. This is a new Joint Unit made up of numerous members from the Ministry of National Education and Health, installed yesterday Monday by Minister Saâdaoui and Ait Messaoudene to begin, officially, its noble mission which consists of controlling students based on screening tests if they are under the effect of drugs or if they possess drugs and without taking legal action, just as it protects schoolchildren and educational establishments against the presence of drugs.
In this context, the Minister of National Education declared yesterday in Algiers that the committee is responsible for proposing a detailed roadmap.
“This roadmap will specify the modalities for implementing the Decree relating to drug screening tests,” said Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui. In his speech yesterday, on the occasion of the launch of the activities of the new Committee, the Minister of National Education indicated that the Committee’s mission will also include concrete measures for the application of the provisions of the Decree. Still according to the minister, this Committee is made up of qualified representatives from the sectors concerned. Also, and in his speech yesterday, the Minister of Education, Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui, confirmed that the objective of setting up a Committee for the detection of drug consumption in schools is to protect educational establishments and to coordinate efforts between the different sectors. Very concerned and determined both to combat the dangers posed by drugs in schools and among schoolchildren, the Minister of Education specified that “periodic checks could include drug screening tests, also called early indicators of consumption, after obtaining the consent of student representatives or a juvenile affairs judge. Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui stipulated that in the event of proven drug consumption, the person concerned would benefit from treatment and would not be subject to any legal proceedings. It should be noted that the Sectoral Committee for the Detection of Drug Use in Schools was officially established today. It should be remembered that last September, the Minister of National Education, Mohamed Seghir Saâdaoui, sounded the alarm against the increase in the presence of drugs in schools. The alert given by the minister was launched on the occasion of the opening, in Algiers, of the work of the National School Health Day in its first edition. The Minister of National Education described the situation as serious.
