Algerian Samir Zitouni was injured in England after stopping a madman who was attacking passengers on a train at the beginning of this month. After two weeks of hospitalization and three operations on his hand, abdomen and back, he was able to leave the hospital. Mr. Zitouni’s family announced the news on Saturday November 15, picked up by the BBC.
“We are delighted to have him back home, but his recovery will still be long,” the family said in a statement released by the British Transport Police (BTP). “We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support from the public and very touched by all the expressions of sympathy for Samir’s courage during the attack,” the family added. Samir Zitouni, 48, worked as a receptionist on the train between Doncaster and London’s King’s Cross station on Saturday 1 November. Around 6:30 p.m., a knife attack took place on board the train. The Algerian intervened and helped several passengers before being hospitalized in Huntingdon, 120 km from London, in critical condition.
His gesture was noticed in England and followed by the Algerian authorities. On November 11, the Consul General of Algeria in London visited him. “The Algerian Embassy in London and the Consulate General continue to closely monitor the situation of the Algerian citizen, in coordination with his family members, and are also closely monitoring the evolution of his state of health,” the consulate said in a statement. He added that Mr. Zitouni’s state of health “is gradually improving and that he is receiving careful and permanent medical surveillance and monitoring from a specialized medical team.”
