A framework agreement on the optimization of energy consumption in the wastewater treatment process was signed this Wednesday in Algiers between the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Commission (CEREFE) and the National Sanitation Office (ONA).
“The signing of this agreement and the support of CEREFE open up broad development prospects for the Hydraulics sector, in the implementation of its optimization and energy transition strategy,” indicated a press release from CEREFE. The agreement was signed by the Secretary General of CEREFE, Messaoud Khelif, and the Director General of ONA, Mohssen Gharib Dia, at the Office’s headquarters in Baraki (Algiers).
The two institutions, the same source specifies, have agreed to work closely together to optimize energy consumption in the wastewater treatment process, through “the integration of solutions based on renewable energies in the operation of hydraulic sanitation systems.”
As part of this agreement, CEREFE and ONA are working to develop technical, economic and environmental studies on the opportunities for recovering and using sludge from treatment plants, for example, using it as an alternative fuel, notes the same source.
In this respect, the two parties will work together to carry out studies on the methanization of sewage sludge, including the regulatory aspects (storage, transport, distribution, risk, safety) and commercial aspects (buy-back mechanism), as well as the different uses of biomethane (transport, heating, electricity production), explains the press release.
The two institutions also agreed to jointly conduct studies on the carbon footprint of wastewater management activities by establishing carbon balances in the related structures.
Finally, it is also planned, within the framework of the execution of this agreement, to jointly organize training courses, seminars, study days and workshops on the themes of sustainable development, energy management, renewable energies and energy efficiency, concludes the same source.
