As part of the Canex 2025 event, which will be held in Algiers on the sidelines of the 4th intra-African trade fair (IATF 2025), six Algerian short films were selected to participate in the final phase of 3e “Canex Shorts” competition, a continental cinematographic meeting organized by the African Import-Export Bank (Afreximbank). This was indicated by a press release from the Ministry of Culture and Arts, once again emphasizing Algeria’s commitment to strengthen its cultural presence on the African scene.
The “Canex Shorts” competition brings together more than 30 cinematographic works from different African countries this year, testifying to the vitality and diversity of short film cinema on the continent. Among this rich selection, six Algerian productions have managed to stand out and integrate the official list of films in competition. These short films, covering different genres ranging from documentary to fiction through animation, are a reflection of a dynamic and expanding Algerian audiovisual scene.
Three Algerian short films were selected in the documentary category. It is “Tipasa” directed by Ahmed Berremdane, a work that plunges into the heart of the Algerian historical and cultural heritage, “The Spark” signed Karim Tmimount, as well as “The Old City” by Tdjine Salah Eddine Sami, who explores the social and urban dimensions.
In the category of short fiction films, “unstoppable” by Ahmed Ahmed will represent Algeria. This film promises to bring a strong and engaging narrative dimension.
Finally, in the animation category, two works were selected: “Olivia” by Chawki Boukef, as well as “harmonica” by Mohamed Larbi Bourourou, illustrating Algerian wealth and creativity in this often less exploited but very promising area.
The trailers of the films in the running will be screened during a special session scheduled for September 7 at the Palais des Pins Maritimes-Safex, in Algiers. This event will allow the public and professionals in the sector to discover these works before the official announcement of the winners, which will be followed by a prize ceremony. This final phase is part of the will of the African import-export bank to promote film production on the continent and to offer a showcase to emerging talents.
In its press release, the Ministry of Culture and Arts reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the different stages of the IATF, by emphasizing its constant support for creative production and the development of cultural and artistic industries. This support also aims to strengthen the visibility of Algeria in African cultural exchanges and to encourage artists to be part of a dynamic of continental cooperation and exchange.
Placed under the theme “Gateway to New Opportunities” (bridges towards new opportunities), the 4th edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) will take place from September 4 to 10 at the Palais des Expositions des Pins Maritimes in Algiers.
