The Sonatrach Group’s commitment to sustainable development and the fight against climate change was reaffirmed this Monday, during the signing of the group’s “new climate strategy”, highlighting several measures such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the level of integration of renewable energies.
According to a press release from the group, Sonatrach’s “new climate strategy” is part of the sustainable development goals and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to which Algeria is committed.
The strategy is structured around several axes such as the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the increase in the level of integration of renewable energies as well as the development of natural and technological carbon sequestration solutions, with the ambition of achieving a balance between GHG emissions and absorptions by carbon sinks during the second half of the century, specifies the same source.
On this occasion, the Minister of Energy stressed that Algeria also has rich solar energy resources and is fully committed to the development of renewable energy, the aim of which is to achieve a significant share in national electricity production. He added that initiatives aimed at reaching 15 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2035 will help achieve this goal and contribute significantly to achieving Algeria’s international climate goals.
In this sense, he explained that Sonatrach is working to strengthen the robustness and efficiency of its activities in the face of risks related to the global energy and climate situation, affirming that the company has carried out a detailed assessment of its greenhouse gas emissions, which provides a solid basis for setting ambitious emission reduction targets.
The same official continued that Sonatrach has also committed to investing one billion US dollars over 10 years in a large-scale reforestation project on 520,000 hectares. This project, both environmental and economic, will capture carbon, create jobs and contribute to the socio-economic development of Algeria.
The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, the CEO of Sonatrach, Rachid Hachichi, in addition to the Minister of the Environment and Renewable Energy, Fazia Dahlab, the presidents of the Hydrocarbons Regulatory Agency and the National Agency for the Development of Hydrocarbon Resources, the general directors and representatives of the various organizations interested in the issue as well as senior executives of Sonatrach.
