To the great delight of music lovers, Dounya El-Djazairia, one of the greatest female voices of contemporary Malouf, marks her return to the Algerian stage with an exceptional recital. “Sultanat El Malouf”, as she is nicknamed by her peers, will perform this Thursday October 16 from 6 p.m. at the Algerian National Theater Mahieddine Bachtarzi (TNA).
It was in her hometown, at the “Mohamed Tahar Fergani” Regional Theater, that the singer set the tone on October 9, reconnecting with a still loyal audience. These two meetings mark the start of a new tour, which Dounya El-Djazairia presents as an ode to transmission and continuity. “The Malouf must cross the ages and never die. Just as he draws his strength from the past, he must also look to the future,” she confides with passion.
Thus, this Thursday, the Algerian public will be able to rediscover a refined and emotionally charged repertoire: Dalma, El Boughi, Zadjal Allah Akbar, Hosne El Habib and other emblematic pieces of the Andalusian tradition. But beyond the notes and maqâms, it is a living memory that the artist brings to life, linking the legacy of the late Mohamed Taher Fergani and Raymond Leyris to a modern sensitivity.
Revealed in 1994 in the epic Algeria, Dounya El-Djazairia has since established herself as a complete artist, capable of moving with ease from Malouf to Chaoui, from Sahrawi to Andalusian. Her career has taken her to the most prestigious stages in the Arab world and beyond, from the Cairo Opera to Carthage, via the Algerian Cultural Center in Paris.
Currently, she is preparing the release of a new album entirely dedicated to Malouf, a vibrant tribute to the Constantine musical tradition, but also a look towards the future of an art that refuses to die out.
