The IDF says a routine surveillance drone was shot down by UNIFIL peacekeepers near Kafr Kila yesterday, in an incident now under review. According to the military, the drone did not threaten the UN observers, but UNIFIL claimed it flew overhead in an “aggressive manner,” prompting troops to fire and bring it down.
Following the downing, a second Israeli drone passed over the scene and released a grenade. UNIFIL asserted that the munition landed near its patrol and further alleged that an Israeli tank fired toward its team. The IDF rejects those claims, insisting no shots were directed at UNIFIL forces.
The incident is being examined through the established liaison mechanisms. Earlier this month, UNIFIL twice accused Israeli forces of dropping grenades in proximity to its observers, resulting in one minor injury. In both cases, Israel said it was targeting Hezbollah activity, not the peacekeepers.
Israel has repeatedly criticized UNIFIL over the years, arguing the mission has failed to curb Hezbollah’s entrenchment and force buildup along the border.
