💔 The Last Fighter of the Warsaw Ghetto Is Gone

Michael Smuss—the last known living fighter from the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising—passed away at 99. His death was reported today after a year in which he was repeatedly profiled as the uprising’s final eyewitness.

Born in Danzig, he was barred from school at six under Nazi decrees. With his father he was forced into the Warsaw Ghetto, where squalor and starvation were the rule. “I thank God for saving me… so I could tell people about what happened,” he said in a recent interview, a line he lived by as he spoke to students and diplomats well into his nineties.

Inside the ghetto, Smuss repaired German helmets in a shop on Nalewki Street—then quietly joined the underground. He smuggled letters out and materials in, turning the “thinner” used to clean blood from helmets into fuel for rooftop Molotovs; he also helped procure Beretta pistols from shivering Italian soldiers posted to Warsaw.

After the rebellion was crushed, Smuss was sent to Flossenbürg, diverted toward Dachau, and survived a death march by slipping away before liberation. He later settled in Israel, using his art and testimony—exhibited widely—to etch the truth of Jewish resistance into public memory. May his story keep burning in us. 🕯️
