🇮🇶 — The Nineveh administration has reactivated Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution, opening new offices in Shingal, Makhmour, and Sheikhan to receive compensation claims from those displaced prior to 2003.
While framed as being for repatriation for victims of Saddam-era Arabization, this initiative appears to deliberately exclude Assyrian-majority areas like Hamdaniya and Tel Kaif, taking suit to and following Iraq’s consistent history of serious demographic manipulation.
These moves mirror the failed Kirkuk strategy that led to the 2017 Kurdish referendum, having the affects of:
– Selective compensation opens the door to Kurdish resettlement in key districts.
– The Nineveh Plains, which belongs to the the historical homeland of Assyrians, risks being gradually absorbed into the KRI.
– Yazidi and Assyrian voices remain ignored, despite suffering genocide, displacement, and ongoing neglect since 2014.
Once again, flashy announcements are being made to impress the international community as if the government of Iraq is some progressive, liberal, egalitarian government that respects the dignity of all it’s citizens.
Meanwhile the true people of the region, the indigenous people of Nineveh, are delibrately sidelined in favor for Baghdad’s and Erbil’s true nefarious political goals.
