The US president J.Biden on Thursday extended the Syria-related national emergency for another year, citing “extraordinary” threats to US national security by Damascus and its Russian and Iranian allies.
In mid-October 2019, former US President Donald Trump declared a national emergency to deal with an extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.
In a statement, the White House said Biden “took these actions to deal with the extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States posed by the actions of Damascus.”
These practices are Damascus’ pursuit of weapons of mass destruction and missile programs, and undermining U.S. and international efforts to stabilize and reconstruct Iraq, according to the statement.
