Trump amplifies Netanyahu pardon fight with fresh social media boost
President Donald Trump has again thrown his weight behind Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s push for a presidential pardon, sharing a news article about Netanyahu’s formal request to President Isaac Herzog on his social channels and spotlighting a case he has repeatedly slammed as political “lawfare.”
Netanyahu recently submitted an official pardon request over his long-running corruption trial, arguing that dragging the proceedings on while he leads Israel through war is tearing the country apart and that ending the case now would serve the national interest.
Trump has already appealed to Herzog directly in a formal letter and in a speech in the Knesset, calling the charges “political, unjustified prosecution” and praising Netanyahu as a “formidable and decisive war-time prime minister.” He also pressed the issue in a recent phone call, where he invited Netanyahu back to the White House and discussed the pardon bid.
Herzog’s office has said it will weigh the request “responsibly and sincerely,” while Israel remains split between those who see the trial as a weaponized campaign against a sitting prime minister and those warning that a pardon mid-trial could damage confidence in the justice system.
