Ukraine wants to create a coalition with neighboring NATO countries to shoot down Russian missiles.
This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the celebrations for the Day of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, when, in particular, he presented F-16 fighter jets.
“We must work on the technical feasibility so that there is the use of combat aircraft by neighboring countries against missiles that hit Ukraine in the direction of our neighbors. First of all, the countries of the Alliance,” the head of state said.
The President instructed Ukrainian diplomats to prepare a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council, at which they plan to discuss the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles by the Alliance countries bordering Ukraine.
“There is a good version of our NATO-Ukraine council. We have already collected it on the issue of safety at sea. I have instructed our respective diplomats to work with NATO to take place such a meeting… There is such a tool, I want to try it, so that NATO countries talk with Ukraine about the possibilities of such a small coalition of neighboring countries that will shoot down enemy missiles,” he explained.
Zelenskyy admitted that such a decision is difficult for partners, because they are “always afraid of unnecessary escalation.” He agreed that the obligation to help Ukraine shoot down missiles is a great responsibility for neighboring countries.
“But it definitely should have been done a long time ago,” he concluded.
