The director of the ‘Leather Industry’ unit in Cheraga, affiliated with the Textile & Leather Group ”GETEX”, Mahieddine Istanbul, highlighted a remarkable development of production capacities linked to the textile and leather industry in Algeria , noting that “GETEX products now cover between 18 and 23% of the needs of the national market, and 100% of the needs of the military and paramilitary sector in Algeria.”
During his speech on the program ”Dayf Essabah” on the Algerian Radio Channel l, Mahieddine Istanbul highlighted the importance of the textile and leather branch of the ”GETEX” group, on which the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production relies heavily on to contribute to the diversification of the national economy and the creation of employment opportunities, noting that “Algeria has achieved self-sufficiency in leather, since the percentage of leather production has reached 90%.
The guest of Radio specified Istanbul underlined that the ”GETEX” group has developed a road map under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, in order to develop the textile and leather sector , which was clearly demonstrated by the acquisition of new machines according to the development plan from which all branches of the group benefited, which made it possible to increase production capacities in the textile and leather industry. He revealed that “shoe production in Algeria has reached 3 million shoes per year.” As for the production of gloves, the group can now “produce 100,000 gloves per year, and for leather clothing, its production volume has reached 30,000 per year”.
On the other hand, regarding the campaign to collect sacrificial skins, launched four years ago by the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, the speaker stressed that “this campaign has an economic and environmental dimension”, noting that “the ministry was keen, this year, to exploit it optimally, mobilizing all means to guarantee its success, months before Eid al-Adha”.
Furthermore, he revealed that “for the first time, technical centers of landfilling distributed in 22 wilayas were involved in the campaign, because these centers supervised the collection of skins and then salted them in special places, so that all recovered skins are then directed to an institution specializing in processing in order to export them or transfer them to national institutions and factories. In this regard, he indicated that there are consultations with Italian companies to conclude a partnership agreement in the field of leather and textiles.
