Given the torrential rains which hit Oued Rhiou (Relizane) on Sunday evening, killing one person, the local authorities, supported by the Ministry of the Interior, launched an emergency plan to rescue residents and limit the damage. This was stated in a press release from the ministry on Monday.

Due to the heavy rains which fell on the wilaya of Relizane, causing a significant rise in the waters of Wadi Krikra in the commune of Oued Rhiou, several neighborhoods were invaded, causing significant material damage and the tragic death of a child, the press release said.

According to the same source, “a crisis unit was set up, on the instructions of the Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, Saïd Sayoud, at the daïra of Oued Rhiou”. This unit, detailed the press release, brings together all the related services and has the mission “to guarantee rigorous monitoring on the ground of the evolution of the situation, to organize the census of affected families and to coordinate intervention and assistance operations”.

The Civil Protection services, for their part, mobilized all their human and material resources with the aim of “pumping water, securing residents and protecting property”, we read in the press release.

The minister also ordered the launch of an expert study on the situation of the wadi, with a view to “proposing the necessary measures and provisions” in light of the expected results, in order to guarantee the security of citizens and the protection of their property, it is noted from the same source.

It should be noted that the decision was taken after several homes were affected, particularly in the Boudjellal neighborhoods and Rue des Martyrs, where dozens of homes suffered heavy damage.

The unfortunate loss of a child during these bad weather has caused consternation. Following this tragedy, local authorities went to the site to see the extent of the damage and present their condolences to the bereaved family, according to the same source.
