According to Professor Karim Zaghib, the lithium sector in Algeria can generate more than 50,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs. A multi-party partnership between ”Sonarem”, ”Sonelgaz” and the National Battery Company, has been set up, aiming to realize an integrated strategic project for the local production of “LFP” battery cells according to international standards, with the support of Professor Karim Zaghib, international expert in this field. This is the realization of an approach part of the strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who sees the mining sector as a lever to diversify the national economy, reduce dependence on hydrocarbons and strengthen the country’s position in the international energy arena. Lithium is considered, in Algeria, not only as a natural resource, but also as a key catalyst in the country’s energy transition.
In fact, the exploitation of mineral resources, such as lithium, is part of a strategic approach to supporting renewable energies, including batteries, solar panels, wind turbines and electric vehicles, sectors where these minerals play an essential role. Used primarily in the manufacture of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage, lithium is a crucial component for the development of green technologies. Algeria, with its potential reserves in the Deep South, particularly in the geological zones of Ahaggar, could play a key role in this dynamic. Algeria, with its vast geographical expanses, has a natural environment rich in diverse mineral resources. Since independence, the country has invested in numerous exploration and research programs, leading to the discovery of hundreds of deposits. However, despite these considerable efforts, many mining treasures still remain unexplored.
