A delegation of scientists from NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the American space agency, visited the Houari-Boumediene University of Science and Technology (USTHB), with a view to establishing cooperation between scientists and researchers from both countries, in different fields.

This meeting is part of the NASA-Land-Cover and Land-Use Change (LCLUC) program which focuses, among other things, on urbanization, deforestation, agricultural expansion, desertification, detection and monitoring active fires as well as the impact of these changes on air and water pollution, loss of carbon to the atmosphere, food security concerns, water scarcity, loss of productive land , dust storms, health and migration.

Present during this visit, the scientific head of the NASA delegation, Dr. Sid-Ahmed Boukabara, established in the United States for 25 years, principal scientist of the strategy program of the earth sciences division, stressed that the objective of this visit is “first exploration, then planning collaboration between scientists and researchers from both countries in the areas of climate change and their impact, among others, on energy, water and ‘agriculture “.

For his part, the rector of the USTHB, Professor Djamel Eddine Akretche, expressed the hope that these exchanges would have “positive repercussions” on the development of space technologies, particularly with regard to climate change, water and agriculture.

The rector of the university stressed that these meetings “allow researchers and doctoral students to benefit from experiences and develop their knowledge in the service of the country”.

Furthermore, and still as part of the scientific activities organized on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its creation, the Houari-Boumediene University of Science and Technology launched on April 27, in collaboration with the Urban Transport Company and suburban Algiers (ETUSA), a scientific caravan entitled “Science for all”, the aim being to bring science closer to citizens.

Offered and fitted out by ETUSA in the form of a scientific and technological laboratory, this caravan is operated by a traveling bus, with the aim of bringing the University closer to the citizen through the on-site organization of activities and demonstrations to popularize science, in various scientific and technological fields, including mathematics, physics, electricity, environment, earth sciences, civil engineering, biology, chemistry, artificial intelligence, IT and energy.

The USTHB Science-Bus will be deployed for a month in public spaces in the wilaya of Algiers, notably Les Sablettes, La Prize d’eau, the Parc des Grands Vents and that of Ben Aknoun as well as in other spaces public, with the aim of getting children interested in science and technology and instilling in them the spirit of creativity and innovation.

This initiative will also constitute traveling open days for future high school graduates at the Houari-Boumediene University of Science and Technology. In addition, this action aims to “awaken and stimulate the creativity and inventiveness of children in order to make science accessible to all,” the press release concludes.
