A new controversy agitates the world of contemporary art. The Nigerian artist Slawn, known for his irreverent and provocative approach, recently sowed confusion on social networks by suggesting a collaboration with the American Pop art superstar, Kaws (Brian Donly). An announcement that has proven to be … totally false.
It all started when Slawn published a photo of him alongside an emblematic sculpture of Kaws, accompanied by the legend: “Slawn X Kaws”. Immediately, speculation on a potential collaboration exploded on Instagram and Twitter, fans getting carried away at the idea of a common project between the two artists.
A few hours later, Kaws reacted firmly: “I have nothing to do with this project. Please do not associate my name with that. »»
By this public declaration, the artist clearly denied any involvement, indirectly accusing Slawn of having used his image for promotional purposes without authorization.
Far from apologizing, Slawn claimed the unofficial nature of the announcement. On his networks, he continued to quip in the situation by distributing free t-shirts stamped “Fake Original Slawn X Kaws”. He even wrote: “The guy already hates me. »»
In a video, Slawn advised young artists to “play intelligently” and “not cross certain legal limits”, while fully assuming his gesture.
This case raises important questions about the limits of provocation in contemporary art. Did Slawn want to pay tribute to Kaws? Or has he knowingly used his notoriety to create a buzz? In a world where the image takes precedence, the border between inspiration and appropriation becomes more and more vague.
If this false collaboration has (for the moment) do not give rise to legal proceedings, it recalls the importance of respecting copyright and the integrity of artists. Slawn, playing with the marketing codes, succeeded in his spotlight but at the cost of a conflict with a respected figure in the middle.
