LA 7e Fête de la Figue et des Products du Terroir this year brings together more than 230 farmers and craftsmen from eight wilayas in the country, namely Béjaïa, Sétif, Bordj Bou-Arréridj, Touggourt (Ouargla), Bouira, Batna, Tlemcen and Tizi Ouzou. This event with multiple dimensions, agricultural, tourist and economic, takes place over a period of three days in Béni Djellil, in Béjaïa.
The kick-off of this event organized by the Wilaya Chamber of Agriculture was given by the wali of Béjaïa, Kamel-Eddine Karbouche on Thursday, in the presence of the local authorities, the vice-president of the APW and several parliamentarians. The chief executive said, on this occasion, that “this event is an important meeting to discover local agricultural products, craft products and especially dry fig, symbol of the production of our wilaya”.
He added that this event “constitutes an opportunity to support local farmers and craftsmen, to encourage them to invest more in the agricultural sector in order to consolidate the place of our products in the local and national market”. And to underline that “this meeting reflects the importance given by the State to the development of local agricultural products and in support of the efforts made for rural and sustainable development”. The wali then listened to farmers’ grievances and undertook to seek solutions adapted to the priorities expressed.
The Fair stands have a wide variety of local agricultural products, in particular the dry, soft and juicy fig, declined in all its varieties and colors – green (white), violet and black – with fine or thick skin. Among the most famous local names, we find Taâmriwth, Ajenjar, Taleqakht, Avakhour, Avouankik, Taâoulith, Takheboucht, Tandjiwth, Toufrint and Thit. Other varieties are also exposed, such as Tamliwith, Taberrant, Taghanimt or Ameal.
Many processed agricultural products are also offered in the stans of participants: olive oil, dried olives, honey, traditional pasta (couscous, rechta, etc.), pepper, tomato, dried onion, mint, herbal teas, aromatic products, as well as jams (apricot, fig, orange) and various spices.
The figure of the fig has become a well -established tradition in the wilaya of Béjaïa. In addition to this event, the National Salon of Dry Fig of Béni Maâouche is organized each end of the year and attracts a large audience. Several villages also perpetuate this development of agricultural products through different local festivals: Figure de La Figue de Barbarie in Chellata (Akbou), Plum fair in Laâlem (commune of Tamrijt), citrus fair in Timzerit, or the Safran festival in January in Béjaïa.
The objective of the feast of Béni Djellil is clear: to value dry fig and local products, to promote local agriculture, to attract visitors to discover the beauty of villages, to develop cultural and mountain tourism, to strengthen the supply of the national market, and to open a space for discussion on techniques to improve crops in quality as in quantity, while fighting against disease.
