Sunflower culture: a promising harvest expected for this season

A full development sector.

Algeria, which has embarked on the culture of sunflower, intends to develop this sector more to depend as little as possible on the outside market. The harvest for this season promises to be promising, with an oscillating yield between 10 to 24 quintals per hectare.

This was indicated by the director of the regulation and enhancement of agricultural productions at the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Hanane Labiod, noting that the Sunflower Harvest campaign is underway and will be spread out until the end of August and at the beginning of September. “Launched last week since the wilaya of Béjaïa, the national harvesting of the sunflower for the 2025 agricultural season promises to be promising,” said Ms. Labiod. “The first results of the production are encouraging,” she said. Intervening the day before yesterday on national television, she said that the first results highlight a production that oscillates between 10 to 24 quintals per hectare.

Stressing the importance and the strategic character of the culture of this oilsear, it indicated that Algeria has embarked on this new experience in the national development program for strategic crops, with a view to stimulating the production of essential products, like cereals, pulses and oil plants, with the ultimate objective of strengthening the country’s food security.

The director of the regulation and enhancement of agricultural productions at the Ministry of Agriculture did not fail to point out that the cultivation of oilseeds had been done for years, but in a timid way. From now on, a great interest is granted to these cultures, with the implementation of a five -year program in order to reduce the import bill, especially since these products, necessary for the production of oils but also of livestock food are exclusively imported.

Note the increase in areas devoted to sunflower cultivation during this season, namely 9,500 hectares in the east and in the west of the country, this manager recalled the objective of reaching 60,000 hectares devoted to this culture by 2028.

“In addition to the northern regions, it is towards the south of the country that we have turned to the culture of sunflower, because of the availability of agricultural land but also water resources,” said Ms. Labiod, saying that the development of this kind of culture does not require special conditions. “These cultures are not expensive and succeed in all regions of the country,” she noted, recalling the incentives and facilities granted to encourage these cultures.

She thus underlined the membership of farmers to this project, especially that good results are recorded and that the harvests will be systematically marketed.

As a reminder, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Youcef Cherfa, launched last Wednesday, since an agricultural production unit (ex-pilot-pilot) in the commune of Oued Amizour, in the wilaya of Béjaïa, the national campaign of the harvest of sunflower for the 2025 agricultural season.

The Minister then underlined the “clear increase” of the area dedicated to strategic crops, in particular oilseeds, encouraging agricultural production units to get involved in the policy of industrial strategic cultures, in particular rapeseed and sunflower, and even soy in the future.
