Far apart by geographical distance but close by positions taken and the conviction of a common future, Algeria and Somalia, through their two heads of state, sign, in Algiers, the renewal of a relationship with all-round strategic scope.
This is how the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received his Somali counterpart, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, this Tuesday to discuss the main regional issues in Africa and the Middle East and strengthen bilateral cooperation in various areas.
President Tebboune underlined, in a joint statement to the press at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic in El-Mouradia, that “this second visit of the Somali leader to Algiers illustrates the shared desire to strengthen bilateral cooperation and consolidate political dialogue between our two countries”. He added: “We reviewed many issues and exchanged our visions at the Arab and African levels. »
In this perspective, the President of the Republic reaffirmed Algeria’s support for the Palestinian cause in favor of the establishment of an independent state on the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds as its capital. Regarding Libya, he stressed that resolving the crisis must imperatively involve a “Libyan-Libyan” political solution, entirely led by the Libyans. He considered, in this regard, that an inclusive electoral process constituted “the appropriate way to preserve the unity of the country and put an end to foreign interference in its internal affairs”.
In terms of bilateral relations, President Tebboune highlighted partnership opportunities, particularly in the sectors of energy, agriculture, maritime fishing, the pharmaceutical industry and higher education. “In terms of higher education, we are recording significant progress to exploit existing opportunities and strengthen cooperation, since Algeria will welcome 110 Somali students for training during the 2026-2027 academic year,” he said.
For his part, the Somali president also reiterated his country’s support for the Palestinian people in their struggle for independence and the establishment of a sovereign state with Al-Quds as its capital, within the 1967 borders. He, in turn, indicated that he had discussed several regional issues with President Tebboune. In addition to Libya, discussions focused on the situation in Sudan and Western Sahara. He stressed, in this sense, that it is “essential to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of these countries”.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also discussed with Abdelmadjid Tebboune the main areas of cooperation, including trade, investment, education, defense, security, agriculture and human capacity development.
The two leaders, on this occasion, agreed to “work jointly with the ambition of guaranteeing lasting stability at the regional level, promoting economic integration and contributing to the achievement of the objectives of Agenda 2063 of the African Union”. Tebboune’s host said that the agreements signed during this visit constitute “the basis of a new phase of advanced cooperation between Algeria and Somalia, reflecting the desire of the two countries to transform their historic friendship into concrete and organized cooperation, for the benefit of their peoples and the development of the region and the African continent.”
This meeting was, according to Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, an opportunity for an exchange “imbued with a spirit of brotherhood, mutual understanding and a common desire to strengthen the historical ties between their two peoples”.
He revealed that “it is an honor and a pleasure for me to be in Algeria, this country, whose glorious history of liberation, leadership and solidarity, remains a source of inspiration for all of us, in Africa and the Arab world.” With this in mind, “I would like to express my gratitude and sincere thanks for the warm welcome and hospitality that I and the delegation accompanying me enjoyed upon our arrival in Algeria.”
To conclude, he highlighted “the need to build a solid partnership between the two countries, based on mutual respect and the pursuit of the common interest”. In his own words, this visit, in this regard, made it possible to review the solidity of relations between Algeria and Somalia.
