The Italian ambassador to France was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after words from Matteo Salvini against Emmanuel Macron deemed “unacceptable” by Paris. During a speech, the vice-president of the Council of Ministers again tackled the position of the French President, favorable to sending troops to Ukraine.
New Franco-Italian diplomatic toch, after an release from number two of the Italian government, Matteo Salvini. “Italian soldiers in Ukraine?” Absolutely not. If Emmanuel Macron wants, let him go there himself. Put a helmet, take a rifle and go ahead in Ukraine, “he launched during a speaking on August 20 in Milan.
The next day, the Italian ambassador to Paris Emanuela d’Alessandro was at the Quai d’Orsay, where she had been summoned, several French public media reported. “It was reminded to him that these remarks went against the climate of confidence and the historical relationship between our two countries,” a diplomatic source told France Inter. Reviews deemed “unacceptable” which, according to this same source, would undermine the “recent bilateral developments, which have highlighted strong convergences between the two countries, in particular with regard to unfailing support to Ukraine”.
According to the Italian daily newspaper La REPUBBLICA, this invitation from the ambassador would follow the lack of response from the Palais Chigi – siege of the presidency of the Council of Ministers – as well as the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that the diplomatic adviser of Emmanuel Macron and the French ambassador would have called to disavow the Northern League, which Matteo Salvini directs. The latter’s statements arise against the backdrop of Emmanuel Macron’s will to send Western troops to Ukraine. An “option”, for which the French president has regularly pleaded since February 2024, which he would have mentioned in June 2023 during a defense council and which was handed over to the table during the diplomatic sequence which opened after the meeting in Alaskimi between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. “In Brussels and Paris, there is a madman” at a meeting of the members of the “coalition of volunteers” on July 10, Emmanuel Macron had obtained the creation of a “headquarters” in Paris, for a year before a rotation with London. An initiative which had been welcomed as a “diplomatic victory” by the supporters of the French president, even though France and Great Britain would be the only two countries ready to contribute in matters of men, according to the British press.
The latter had in particular, among the great absent, highlighted the case of Italy, whose active forces are more substantial than those of the United Kingdom. Italy, which according to a source of the Times, would have “clearly indicated” that it would not engage any soldier, like Poland and Spain.
This is not the first time that Matteo Salvini criticizes Emmanuel Macron on the Ukrainian file. “Zelensky asks for peace, Trump works for peace, Putin wants peace” while “in Brussels and Paris, there is a madman,” said the vice-president of the Council of Ministers in early March, also during a trip to Milan. Beyond Matteo Salvini, the enmity between the macronist clan and the Italian government of Giorgia Meloni is of public notoriety … and not only vis-à-vis the attitude to adopt with regard to the United States of Donald Trump. In May 2023, the Head of Italian diplomacy Antonio Tajani had canceled a visit to Paris after criticism from Gérald Darmanin for the president of the Council of Ministers, considering him “unable to solve migration problems”.
