Towards the realization of cooperation opportunities
Somali President visits Algeria
Algeria and Somalia have signed several cooperation agreements in various fields. Yesterday, at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune co-chaired with the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding in the field of higher education between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Somali Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, as well as an executive program between the two ministries for the years 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029. On the same occasion, the Algerian and Somali Governments also signed an agreement in the field of agriculture and fishing and an agreement in the field of animal health. Another agreement was signed between the Governments of the two countries in the fields of oil, gas and mining. The two parties also signed an agreement on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic passports. In a joint statement to the press, following his talks with his Somali counterpart at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, President Tebboune welcomed his Somali counterpart and the delegation accompanying him, stressing that this visit, “the second of its kind, reflects the common desire to strengthen our cooperation and exchange views on issues of common interest.”
The President of the Republic specified that the talks focused on cooperation opportunities in the fields of energy, agriculture, fishing, the pharmaceutical industry and higher education.
Regarding higher education, the President of the Republic declared: “We have taken a step allowing us to intensify cooperation”, specifying that “Algeria will welcome 110 Somali students who will benefit from training for the 2026-2027 season”.
“We will extend this initiative by offering other scholarships in the areas of professional, police and defense training,” added the President of the Republic. The face-to-face meetings between President Tebboune and the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held yesterday Tuesday at the headquarters of the Presidency of the Republic, were extended to members of the delegations of the two countries.
During the discussions, the two Presidents discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation as well as issues related to the Arab and African levels. On this subject, in the joint statement to the press, following his talks with his Somali counterpart, the President reaffirmed his support for the Palestinian people in their quest for freedom and independence within the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds-East as its capital. The President spoke about the situation in Libya and the importance of a political solution led by the Libyans themselves, through elections, in order to preserve the unity of the country and put an end to any foreign interference in the internal affairs of this country.
President Tebboune also announced that he had discussed with his Somali counterpart the situation in the Sahel and the Sahara, as well as the situation in Sudan.
“We expressed our deep rejection of the blatant and disastrous interference that continues to harm this brotherly country,” which violates all the ethical principles on which the traditions of cooperation in the Arab-African region are based, he said about the situation in Sudan. More generally, the President continued: “We welcome the results of these consultations and we look forward to continuing our cooperation and our partnership for the good of our two brotherly countries.”
The Somali President arrived in Algeria on Monday for an official visit, at the head of a large delegation.
Yesterday, Tuesday, he prayed at the Martyr’s Sanctuary in Algiers, in memory of the martyrs of the glorious War of National Liberation, and paid a visit to the National Museum of the Mujahideen, where he discovered the different stages of the national struggle, from popular resistance to the national movement then to the armed revolution, admiring objects and documents which testify to the long history of the Algerian struggle and the heroism of its people in their quest for freedom and of independence.
