The Minister of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production, Ali Aoun, announced this Sunday the establishment, soon, of the National Industrial Land Agency (ANFI), which will be responsible for the management of industrial land, as well as development operations in industrial zones and their connection to roads and various networks.

During his speech at the El Moudjahid forum, the minister focused on the establishment of the ANFI, following the measures taken during the last government council. He revealed, in this sense, the recovery of an estimated total of 6,000 hectares of land “which was not used for investment, and which was exploited by speculators with fictitious investment projects”, a- he clarified.

After discussing the state of play in the sector, the minister affirmed that agri-food production in Algeria has experienced qualitative progress and that his department is working to further boost this production so that its products can be competitive in foreign markets. He highlighted the importance of developing local industry, particularly the manufacturing of oils, the processing of sugar, as well as the production of yeast which, according to him, represents an import figure of 89 million dollars, adding that the ministry is in the process of supporting four yeast producers at the national level.

Ali Aoun also highlighted that Algerian cement exports continued to increase, to exceed $700 million in 2023, knowing that the country imported this material a few years ago.

In this regard, the minister indicated that the national industrial sector intends to contribute 10% to Algeria’s GDP by 2027, compared to a current contribution of 4.1%, across all sectors, “including those of the automobile, cement, pharmaceutical and processing industries, particularly agri-food,” he said.

In addition, he stressed that the pharmaceutical production sector as well as the automobile sector are the most attractive for foreign investors, recalling that the local market is a demand market, which constitutes an opportunity to invest in several areas.

Regarding the automobile sector, Aoun affirmed that after covering the needs of the national market in terms of vehicles, some local factories such as Fiat are considering exporting these vehicles across Algeria.

He also revealed that his department has granted 18 licenses for the importation of tourist vehicles, with a budget of $1 billion allocated for the importation of 180,000 cars. In this sense, he confirmed that more than 150,000 tourist vehicles have been imported to date, adding that some dealers have obtained licenses but have not yet delivered the full quotas.

Ali Aoun also said that the ministry’s digital platform received 20,000 complaints against car dealerships. He explained that his department opts for streamlining the process of importing cars, continuing that for the government, “cars are necessary, but not a priority, and we must focus on the priorities.”
