The Minister of Fisheries and Fisheries Production, Ahmed Badani, affirmed that all necessary measures have been taken for the revival of red coral fishing. Such an initiative should have positive impacts on the national economy by generating tax revenues and jobs, while preserving the sustainability of this resource, he stressed.
During a press conference held on Monday on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the 2023-2024 educational year of institutes and schools in his sector, Badani specified that all procedures related to the exploitation of red coral have been finalized with a view to the imminent reopening of this activity.
In this regard, ten areas have been selected across the country for red coral fishing, according to the same official, of which two areas will be exploited each year, and the remaining eight areas will benefit from a five-year rest period to allow the regeneration of coral reefs and guarantee sustainable exploitation of this resource.
Badani also assured that all arrangements relating to equipment and monitoring have been made, particularly in coordination with the Ministry of Health, he stressed that wilaya commissions have been set up as part of this activity in the wilayas of El Tarf, Annaba, Skikda and Jijel.
In addition, he estimated that this activity should generate tax revenues of 160 million Algerian dinars per year and create 400 direct jobs and 900 indirect jobs, specifying that the operation will extend from the Calle region in the far east of the country to Tlemcen in the far west.
On this occasion, the minister announced that the number of trainees trained in aquaculture during the year 2023-2024, reached more than 4,400 during the season, an increase of 55% compared to last season. More than 15,567 trainees joined the nine training institutions in the sector during this year, he added, an increase of 20% compared to last year.
