🇮🇷Iran could cut underwater internet cables in the Strait of Hormuz and disconnect Gulf countries from the internet.

This is made clear by the Iranian state agency Tasnim, which published a map of cables in the strait. The destruction or damage of cables threatens a digital collapse in the region, as a number of countries would be left without physical access to the internet in such a case.

Seven cables (Falcon, AAE-1, TGN-Gulf, SEA-ME-WE), through which 15% of the world’s internet traffic passes, are located in Oman’s territorial waters.

For countries such as the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Iraq, this would lead to severe economic consequences. Without the internet, banking operations would cease and data centers would stop functioning.
