🐟WATCH: Israel Delivers Fish to Africa-Bound Pelicans to Fuel Their Journey and Protect Fish Farms
Every autumn, an estimated 40,000–50,000 great white pelicans pass through Israel on their journey from Europe and western Asia to Africa. Many stop to rest and replenish their energy before continuing south.
At Mishmar HaSharon Reservoir, beside the Vickar lookout in Emek Hefer in central Israel, trucks deliver fish as flocks of pelicans gather for a meal. A single pelican can eat roughly one kilogram (2.2 pounds) of fish a day.
The feeding program helps the birds continue their migration while reducing raids on commercial fish farms. Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority works with agricultural partners to supply fish not intended for commercial sale at designated sites, including the Hula Valley and Mishmar HaSharon Reservoir.
